CASTLEBAR Celtic F.C. has been granted a licence to partake in the FAI Women’s National League.

The league, containing seven clubs, will be officially launched in October with a start date set for November.

The successful Mayo club is joined in the series by Wexford Youths, Cork League, Raheny, Peamount and Shamrock Rovers in what promises to be an exciting adventure.

A major incentive for the participants is that the league winners will represent Ireland in the Women’s UEFA Cup in August 2012.

The manager of the Celtic squad, Jeremy Dee, stated: “This is a massively positive step in the right direction for the club.

“We have players in the town and county that deserve to be playing on the international stage and the National League will give them the platform to do so.

“We have a duty as coaches to ensure a pathway for players to perform at the highest level. That is now in place.

“It promises to be a great experience for the players if they grab the initiative and consistently work hard on their fitness.”

The Celtic squad is being sponsored by Bosh, Linenhall Street, Castlebar.

Sue Ronan, head coach of women’s football in Ireland, said the new league will be a cornerstone in the future success of the game.
