The FAI in conjunction with FIFA is running one of FIFA’s very successful campaigns to introduce more females to the game of football. ‘Live Your Goals’ was launched and promoted in 2011 as part of the FIFA Women’s World Cup in Germany.
Live Your Goals (LYG) campaign objectives are to:
- Spark, foster and establish excitement for women’s football
- Inspire young girls to play football
- Create a positive experience
- Break down prejudice against women’s football
- Turn women’s football into a sport for the masses in the long run
- Make professional women’s football popular
This is the second year the FAI have coordinated the programme. The LYG campaign outlines clear messages, that women’s football is an authentic and attractive expression of a modern lifestyle. It shows optimism, fun belonging and physical beauty. Women’s football is not just socially accepted but highly respected and has become an integral part of football development in the country.
The FIFA Live Your Goals campaign is in Athenry on Sunday, September 15. Local clubs from around Galway have been invited to attend. The programme will involve a morning of small sided games, fun games and activities such as testing players’ skills and Inflatable Foosball. Most importantly young fans got to meet local female National League players. Galway Women’s FC has recently joined the Bus Éireann Women’s National league which now completes the player pathway for young girls.
Speaking ahead of the Festival of Football, Women’s National Coordinator Ger Dunne, states how important the Live Your Goals campaign is. “This is our second year running the programme and we’ve had huge success with it. It’s fantastic that Galway WFC have now joined our National League, these players are now the role models for all young girls across the county. It’s an opportunity for local girls to progress from their local club right through to the highest club level and who knows maybe even go on to represent Ireland,” he said.
The FIFA Live Your Goals campaign is a great opportunity for all the local national league players to share their experiences with young fans, giving them advice and providing encouragement, for them to stay involved in the game no matter what level they play at, and maybe even inspire a few more to become future international players.
The Live Your Goals Festival of Football will be a great day for all the clubs and young girls involved, whether they play every week or have never kicked a football before, there’ll be something for everyone to take part it.
