Old reliables Amber Barrett and Áine O’Gorman scored the goals to get Peamount United off to a wining start in their opening SÓ Hotels Women's National League clash at PRL Park.

But visitors Cork City made the Newcastle side work hard for the three points in a far from convincing display from James O’Callaghan’s team.

The Leesiders, beaten 9-1 at home by Peas in the final league game of last season, stunned the home side by taking the lead after just 21 seconds.

Rachel O’Regan threaded the ball through for the run of Katie McCarthy who picked her spot with a crisp right-foot drive to the corner of Naoisha McAloon’s net.

The response wasn’t long in coming as Peas should’ve been level on six minutes; Barrett shooting wastefully wide having been played in on goal by Eleanor Ryan Doyle.

Last year’s 30-goal topscorer would make amends within a minute, however.

Picked out by Megan Smyth Lynch’s cross, Barrett’s initial effort was blocked by keeper Maria O’Sullivan. The Republic of Ireland international striker was quickly back to her feet to scoop home the loose ball.

The elegant left foot of Smyth Lynch provided the assist once again as Peas took the lead on 23 minutes for what would prove the winner.

Her perfectly flighted corner caused havoc in the Cork area before skipper O’Gorman toe-poked home from close range.

City defender Eabha O’Mahoney prevented Peas extending their lead nine minutes into the second half with a terrific goal-line clearance from Smyth Lynch following Barrett’s bustling run on the counterattack down the left.

Though Peas dominated possession they struggled to create chances.

A 68th minute chip from Barrett hadn’t enough height to beat O’Sullivan in what was their last real opportunity on goal.

The resilient Rebels kept playing and had their chances to equalise.

Goalscorer McCarthy whizzed a shot across goal on 76 minute while substitute Maggie Duncliffe struck a long range free kick into the grateful arms of McAloon late on.
