League leaders Peamount United showed no mercy for DLR Waves as they inflicted their heaviest defeat of the season at Jackson Park.

Republic of Ireland international Amber Barrett scored a hat-trick, Aine O’Gorman added two, while Eleanor Ryan Doyle and Deirbhaile Beirne were also on target for the league pacesetters.

Barrett gave fair warning as to her intentions early on as she found space on the edge of the box and let fly, but she couldn’t keep her shot down.

It was Barrett’s cross from wide on the right that caused problems for Keelin McEntee, who sliced behind for a corner, and from the resulting delivery Louise Masterson’s shot was cleared off the line.

Barrett again went close with a snapshot from distance that had Erica Turner sprawling to turn behind, but the Waves rearguard couldn’t hold forever.

Frustratingly for the home side, the opening goal came from their best period of pressure as Leanne Payne forced a hurried clearance from goalkeeper Naoisha McAloon.

The long ball was flicked into the path of O’Gorman, who turned inside Roisin McGovern and slotted the ball into the corner.

Peamount continued to dominate but had to wait until three minutes from the break for their second goal, and again it came from the direct route.

Niamh Farrelly played an angled pass that found the run of Barrett, and the Republic of Ireland international used her pace to race clear and slide the ball past Erica Turner.

Barrett got her second moments later and this one the home side could have done very little about, the Donegal striker curling an unstoppable shot into the top corner.

Another stunning strike made it 4-0 nine minutes into the second half as Ryan Doyle ran from deep before arrowing a shot into the top bin.

Barrett sealed her hat-trick with a low free kick into the corner, awarded despite the protests of Waves players who felt there had been an offside in the lead-up.

Captain O’Gorman added her second five minutes from time as she got onto sub Megan Smyth-Lynch’s pass, before former Wave Beirne added a seventh in injury time.
