FIFA Women’s World Cup Final official Michelle O’Neill will return to action this weekend, taking charge of the Só Hotels Women’s National League Cup Final.

Sunday’s game between Wexford Youths and Shelbourne will be O’Neill’s first game since she was an assistant referee when the USA claimed the World Cup in Lyon on July 7.

The first silverware of the season is on offer in the final on Sunday (July 21), which takes place at Ferrycarrig Park, Wexford at 3pm.

Speaking ahead of the tie, O’Neill said: “I am really looking forward to the game on Sunday. I was delighted when I got the call appointing me to the fixture. This is what it is all about for me. I was proud to be involved in the World Cup final, but this is also a big game for me. At the end of the day, it is two top-level teams going out to try and win silverware, and it’s the first of the season so it will be a big boost for whoever wins.”

Wexford Youths and Shelbourne are second and third in the Só Hotels Women’s National League, and should take that form into Sunday’s game, which O’Neill expects to be of “high-quality”.

“My role is to go out and make sure the game flows as well as possible and football takes centre-stage. It is always important that the referee makes the game as fair as possible, and that is even more important when a cup is at stake,” added O’Neill.

Commenting on the attention her involvement in the World Cup final has garnered, Michelle said she is happy to be involved in raising the profile of women’s football.

She said: “It was fantastic for me personally to be involved in the World Cup, and to get the call to do the final was just great. But for me it is also about what it does to showcase women’s involvement in football, and that’s what big games like Sunday's are also about. I hope there is a good crowd there to support the players.”
