Cork City recorded their second consecutive victory in the Só Hotels Women’s National League as they comprehensively defeated Kilkenny United in Bishopstown on Sunday afternoon.

Goals from Zara Foley, Ciara McNamara, Christina Dring, Katie McCarthy, Megan Sheehan and a Saoirse Noonan brace was enough to earn City the three points at the expense of Kilkenny, who grabbed a consolation through Emma Campbell.

This was the second meeting between the two sides in the league this season and it was Cork City who emerged successful in the first game in Kilkenny by three goals to nil.

Following their 3-0 victory against Limerick in the Munster Derby last weekend, Rónán Collins’ charges started confidently here and they took the lead inside three minutes.

Saoirse Noonan’s incisive pass picked out Christina Dring inside the box and her clever back-heel sent Zara Foley through on goal and the midfielder calmly tucked the ball past the goalkeeper.

Dring, who scored brace in that win against Limerick, almost grabbed a brilliant second in the ninth minute but after she gathered Maggie Duncliffe’s superb cross, the forward lobbed the ball over the keeper but crucially wide of the far right post.

The home side would finally double their lead in the 13th minute when Captain Ciara McNamara unleashed an incredible strike that almost took the net off when a corner broke kindly to her inside the box.

City were desperately unlucky not to make it 3-0 midway Zara Foley’s powerful long-range strike crashed against the crossbar following a sweeping attacking move that involved most of the team.

But they wouldn’t have to wait too much longer to celebrate another goal when Dring deservedly added her name to the scoresheet as she secured Eabha O’Mahony perfect through ball rounded the keeper and slotted it home.

Katie McCarthy made it four before the break as she turned in Riona Crowley’s superb cross from the left-wing although Kilkenny quickly reduced the deficit through Emma Campbell.

City defender Emma Farmer’s clearance from Ann Marie Byrne’s cross cannoned of her own near post and went straight to Campbell, who did well to drive the rebound into the roof of the net.

Cork remained dominant in the second period and despite the best efforts of United goalkeeper Lauren Davies they managed to notch their fifth goal of the afternoon when Megan Sheehan finished Maggie Duncliffe’s defence-splitting pass.

Saoirse Noonan made it 6-1 after being set up by Katie McCarthy and she completed the scoring when she netted her side’s seventh late on for her third goal in just seven days to seal an impressive win for Cork City.
