Raheny United make UEFA bow against Hungarians

RAHENY United will make their first appearance in the UEFA Women’s Champions League tomorrow when they take on Hungarian champions MTK Hungaria in Seaview, Belfast (2.00pm).

Bus Éireann Women’s National League champions Raheny know that the Hungarian outfit are the favourites for this Group Three encounter but new coach Casey McQuillan believes they can cause a surprise.

“While I haven’t been able to watch too much footage of MTK I know that our side has the ability to get a result from this fixture,” said McQuillan, who will take charge of United for the first time in this game.

“We’ve worked hard for the last few weeks and we played well in a tournament in Carrickfergus two weeks ago where we scored ten goals and conceded none in three fixtures.

“I know our side can play football and are an attacking side. We’ve been working on how we defend so that we’ll be hard to beat but it won’t be about putting everybody behind the ball.

“I’m confident that we can create chances and have the players who can score goals. Getting a result in our first game is very important.”

Raheny will include recent signings Clare Shine from Cork Women’s FC and Kerie Ryan from Brighton in their squad for the opening game in the group.
