A goal from Emma Hansberry was enough for Wexford Youths to leapfrog their opponents to take top spot in the Contintenal Tyres Women's League National League table after an intriguing battle in Ferrycarrig Park on Saturday evening.

The hosts have been guilty of some tardy starts so far this season, but this time they were out of the blocks in lightning fashion, putting Peamount on the back foot from the off.

Wexford Youths took the lead in the tenth minute when Emma Hansberry curled in a corner from the right and the ball wriggled its way into the far corner of the net past an unsighted Naoisha McAloon.

Peamount's Eleanor Ryan-Doyle had a sniff of a chance on 16 minutes but her first-time effort from 25 yards didn't trouble Sophie Lenehan in the Wexford goal and midway through the half she was again thwarted by the shot-stopper.

Sandwiched between those two efforts, Wexford Youths threatened when Claire O'Riordan whipped in a cross from the right wing, but the inrushing Kylie Murphy failed to get a firm connection on her header.

Ryan-Doyle, who was easily Peamount's most potent attacking threat in the first-half, stroked an effort from outside the area narrowly over the bar on 44 minutes.

Peamount began the second-half with increased intensity, but Youths went close to doubling their advantage on 63 minutes when the industrious Kylie Murphy directed her header wide of the right post.

Peamount threw everything they could at the Slaneysiders in the final ten minutes, with Louise Corrigan steering a header off target on 81 minutes, but the home defence, superbly marshalled by Nicola Sinnott, held firm to help them garner a priceless three points.

Eleanor Ryan-Doyle came close to plundering the equaliser on 85 minutes when she slid in to get on the end of a wonderful left-wing delivery from Megan Lynch, but to Wexford's relief the effort was wide of the upright.

Claire O'Riordan, who worked tirelessly all evening, came close to wrapping up the points in the first minute of injury time, but her left-footed effort from the edge of the area deflected out for a corner.
