UCD Waves battled back late on to secure an important home point against Shelbourne Ladies.

In an entertaining and breathless contest at the UCD Bowl, Waves' skipper Aine O'Gorman scored a wonderful goal to equalise late on after Roma McLaughlin had put Shelbourne ahead.

Streamed live on the Continental Tyres Women's National League Facebook page, Shelbourne Ladies started like a team who needed the win and thought they had gone ahead in the ninth minute.

Siobhan Killeen found space in the middle of the park and threaded a fine ball through to Leanne Kiernan who finished into the bottom corner but her celebrations were cut short as the linesman raised the flag.

UCD Waves could have taken the lead just a minute later as from the counter-attack, Dearbhaile Beirne found space on the right to cross for Kerri Letmon but the UCD Waves forward couldn't turn the ball towards goal and defender Tiegan Ruddy cleared.

Shelbourne Ladies took the lead soon after. Killeen's right-sided corner was only cleared as far as Niamh Prior and her first-time pass found Killeen to cross for McLoughlin who was able to control, turn and finish to put the away side ahead.

Shelbourne Ladies continued to press forward and could have doubled their lead before the break as Kiernan got in down the left again but took the ball right to the byline and could only hit the post.

UCD Waves took a while to begin creating chances but came on strong in the last 20 minutes of the match as Shelbourne were pressed back. They eventually got the equaliser and it was worth waiting for. Karen Duggan took a free-kick quickly and after some neat inter-change by Orlagh Nolan and Duggan, O'Gorman's first-time shot from 25 yards for the top corner.

Waves could have won the game through O'Gorman who got in behind the Shelbourne defence but O'Gorman could only find the side-netting in the final moments.

Shelbourne Ladies had the final opportunity of the game as McLoughlin found Killeen on the edge of the area, and despite having all the time and space to pick her spot, she could only find the hands of Waves keeper Brooke Dunne.
