Shelbourne Ladies got a crucial win to put them firmly back into the Continental Tyres Women's National League against Wexford Youths.

Two goals from Leanne Kiernan and an own goal gave the home side the points at the AUL despite a late rally from Youths.

Kiernan was on form and a constant menace to the Youths back-line, and put Shels ahead in the 11th minute of the game as she capitalised on some poor defending to slot the ball home.

Once again, just after the half-hour, with Wexford beginning to create chances, Kiernan struck again as Niamh Prior did well to get down the left and crossed to the unmarked Kiernan to tap home.

Rianna Jarrett, looking stronger with every minute on the pitch, had the chance to equalise three minutes later after she wrestled through the defence but Amanda McQuillan did brilliantly to tip the ball onto the post.

Wexford continued to pressure and just after the break, Republic of Ireland striker Claire O'Riordan found space in the area and hit the post from eight yards out as Youths were continually guilty of missing chances.

With 12 minutes remaining, Shels clinched the winning goal after an unfortunate error by goalkeeper Sophie Lenehan. Prior's right-sided corner went towards the near post and through Lenehan's arms to seal their third of the game.

Two minutes later, Claire O'Riordan got the goal she deserved after tapping in a cross from substitute Emma Hansberry to give Youths hope.

In truth, Shels have goalkeeper McQuillan to thank for the three points after she produced one of the saves of the season just before Youths second. A Hansberry cross fell to substitute Orla Casey inside the area and Casey's shot rifled towards the top corner but somehow, McQuillan tipped it over the bar.

From the resulting corner, Youths set up a frantic finish after a corner caused a scramble in the area and defender Jess Gleeson smashed the ball home from close range.
