Wexford Youths manager Laura Heffernan was happy to garner a point from an entertaining and intriguing Continental Tyres Women's National League battle with champions Shelbourne at Ferrycarrig Park on Saturday night.

Both sides showed plenty of attacking intent, and went in search of what would have been a priceless winner, but Heffernan conceded it was a game that neither team deserved to lose.

“I think a draw was a fair result. Defensively we were quite good tonight. Sophie (Lenehan) didn't have too many clear-cut saves to make. We had to make a couple of last-ditch tackles, but I think for the most part we kept them on the back foot and we soaked up the pressure well,” she said.

It certainly wasn't a boring 0-0 stalemate, with plenty of goalmouth action to whet the appetite of the supporters, and but for a fine Amanda McQuillan save from a Becky Cassin strike in the 63rd minute the hosts might have plundered the three points.

“A couple of Wednesdays ago up in the AUL, Amanda pulled off an absolute worldy of a save that cost us a draw and again tonight. I think we definitely had the better of the clear-cut chances, but we're delighted with a draw against the current champions,” said Heffernan.

The Youths are now five points clear at the top, having played two games more than nearest rivals Peamount United, and Heffernan says it's all to play for in a difficult run-in.

“We've three games remaining, but it's UCD, Peamount and Cork, so there's still a long, long way to go. But the rest of them have to all play each other as well so there's still plenty of football to be played,” she said.

Wexford Youths are in action in the FAI Cup next week, as they welcome Manulla FC from Mayo to Ferrycarrig Park, and although Heffernan has the league firmly in her sights, she won't take her eye off the ball for the cup.

“To be honest, I think I'd rather have another league game next week and keep the momentum going, but we'll turn our attentions to the cup now and focus on that for next weekend,” she said.
