Limerick FC got life in the Continental Tyres Women’s National League off to a flying start with a 4-0 victory over Kilkenny United at the Markets Field.

The home side dominated the contest throughout with two goals from Lauren Keane, a screamer from Sylvia Gee and a Megan Kelleher header securing the three points.

Dave Rooney’s side enjoyed all the early possession without making any real impact but that all changed in the 11th minute.

A superb Aisling O’Connor cross from the right wing was finished expertly to the net by Lauren Keane to put them in front.

Limerick were nearly in for a second goal a couple of minutes later when Rebecca Horgan broke through on goal but was denied a shot by a well-timed Erin Best tackle.

It was all one way traffic in the opening 20 minutes and Limerick nearly scored again when
Carys Johnson’s ball caused consternation on the Kilkenny defence however Sophie Hudner was denied a goal by a last ditch Shauna Martin block.

Kilkenny eventually forced their way into the contest with a Carla MacManus shot but her effort sailed well over Trish Fennelly’s goal.

Ailbhe Claney also had an effort on goal for Kilkenny as the first half drew to a close that forced Fennelly into action.

Limerick all but secured the opening day win four minutes into the second half. Kilkenny failed to clear their lines and Gee was on hand to power home from 15 yards.

Kilkenny had a great chance to get back into the game just after the hour when a MacManus free kick picked out Best at the back post but she was unable to direct her shot on target.

A third goal soon arrived for Limerick as Keane took advantage of a slip in the Kilkenny defence to prod home from close range. Megan Kelleher added a fourth late on to give Limerick a perfect start to the season.
