A resilient Limerick WFC withheld a battling UCD Waves side to secure a vital point at the Markets Field.

UCD took a well-deserved lead in the opening half through Avril Brierly before Limerick fought back in the second half as Rebecca Horgan slotted home from close-range.

It was the first ever meeting between these two teams and it was last season’s F.A.I Cup finalists that started the stronger against a cautious looking Limerick WFC side.

Dave Rooney’s side soaked up some early pressure but it was the visitors that took a richly deserved lead just after the half hour mark.

In a sign of things to come, just before the opening goal, UCD’s pressure nearly paid off but Kerri Letmon could only watch on as her effort looped over Trish Fennelly in the Limerick goal.

This seemed to give the visitors a surge in confidence as minutes later they took the lead through a well-worked effort which was finished off by the in-form Avril Brierly.

UCD should have doubled their lead with a minute left before the interval but Kerri Letmon’s effort hit the cross bar after a scrabble in the box.

Limerick upped their game in the second half and were rewarded for their hard work with only five minutes gone after the break.

Rebecca Horgan capitalised from some sloppy UCD defending before finishing from close-range to bring her side level.

This gave Limerick a new lease of life as they took the game to UCD for the next 15 minutes, but the visitors began to take a stronghold on the remaining minutes of the game.

UCD played some impressive football in the middle of the park but Dave Rooney’s resilient side battle hard to soak up the pressure from the visitors.

A superb performance from Limerick goalkeeper Trish Fennelly along with some defensive clearances from Marie Curtin ensure that the home side held on for a vital point, in a bid to secure a spot in the top half of the table.

UCD showed why they reached the final of last year’s F.A.I Cup Final but could not unlock a very organised Limerick side on Shannnonside.
