Rianna Jarrett scored midway through the second half to earn champions Wexford Youths a hard-fought three points against UCD Waves on Sunday afternoon.

The striker netted her fourth of the season from substitute Orla Casey's pass as Wexford finally made their dominance count on the scoreboard.

A dogged Waves made it difficult for the three-times league winners and could have taken a point had Dearbhaile Beirne or Naima Chemaou's shots dipped slightly lower.

Youths hung on for a deserved win that leaves them third, two points behind league leaders Shelbourne with a game in hand.

Wexford dominated from the off, and Aisling Frawley gave an early indication as she intercepted high up the pitch and tried to lob UCD keeper Erica Turner to no avail.

It was Frawley's cross that her opposite winger Becky Conroy headed wide shortly after, and Conroy returned the favour with a low cross Frawley should have turned in at the back stick.

A turn and shot from Jarrett brought the best out of Turner with a fingertip save, and she went one better from the returning corner with an excellent stop at her near post from Orlaith Conlon.

Jarrett should have given Wexford the league just before half time as she found herself unmarked from Dwyer's free kick, but with the whole goal to aim at she glanced the ball wide.

Frawley had another chance after following strong running and a good cross from Claire O'Riordan, but she miscontrolled the ball with UCD stretched.

Substitute Casey made the difference barely 90 seconds after replacing Conroy, as she pulled the ball back for Jarrett, who had time and space to pick her spot.

Beirne looked UCD's most likely outlet throughout and she was inches from teeing up Leanne Payne for a leveller before driving just over the bar.
