Katie McCarthy's second-half strike earned Cork City a point on the road against UCD Waves at Jackson Park on Sunday afternoon.

Leanne Payne had given Waves the lead just after half-time and the home side looked to be cruising to victory before McCarthy struck against the run of play.

Both teams could justifiably feel unlucky not to have taken more from the game as UCD dominated the majority of the game but City spurned a number of late chances to snatch all three points.

Chances were at a premium in a first half played in sweltering heat on a hard Jackson Park surface, which UCD will vacate next month as a new pitch is laid.

Ireland international Dearbhaile Beirne looked Waves' most likely attacking outlet throughout, and it was her endeavour down the left wing that produced the first chance.

She beat two players and crossed left-footed towards the inrushing Kerri Letmon, who hooked the ball goalwards, and City's deputy keeper Badana got down smartly to save at her near post.

The best chance of the half came from Turner's long free kick, which bounced through for Letmon, who rounded Badana but couldn't turn the ball back goalwards from a wide angle.

UCD got the goal they deserved just past the hour when Payne was played in behind the defence, and she had time and space to pick her spot to Badana's left.

Cork equalised with their first clear chance of the game as McCarthy beat the offside line and ran through before slotting the ball past Turner.

Maggie Duncliffe came close to a winner late on with a venomous strike Turner could only parry up and onto the top of the bar.

Turner saved from Saoirse Noonan in injury time, while McCarthy was let down by her control moments later, as the spoils were shared.
