Galway WFC overcame the challenge of visitors Cork City WFC at Eamonn Deacy Park on Saturday evening with a decisive 3-0 victory.

The result will be an encouraging shot in the arm for the Corribsiders following their disappointing exit from the League Cup thanks to a 2-1 defeat to Wexford Youths Women last week.

Cork's Savannah McCarthy created the first half-chance of the match with a long-range effort in the opening minutes, but it was the Galway Girls who struck first, through Emma Starr in the 13th minute.

Billy Clery's troops took control from there, dictating possession and tempo but the hosts failed to double their lead until shortly before half time when Lynsey McKey struck beyond Eve Badana in the 41st minute, sending Galway in at the break two goals to the good and leaving Ronan Collins' charges with a steep mountain to climb.

Cork came out fighting after the restart, giving Galway’s rear-guard plenty to deal with, but the home team held firm.

Galway could have extended their lead to 3-0 in the 63rd minute only for Carlie Schecht to be flagged offside in a dangerous position with time to convert.

It was only a momentary reprieve for the Leesiders, however, because less then 10 minutes later the Deacy Park crowd were celebrating yet another goal when Chloe Singleton rattled the back of the net with a fine finish.

Cork were denied a consolation goal in the dying embers when a free kick routine saw Katie McCarthy strike the post before the ball was gathered up by Tina Hughes.

Up next for Galway is a trip away to face UCD Waves while Cork will next do battle against Limerick FC Women.
