Galway WFC edged past Peamount United at a drizzly Eamonn Deacy Park to claim all three points in a pulsating and entertaining Women's National League fixture which ended 3-2.

Galway took the lead after just 80 seconds when an enterprising run from Lynsey McKey down the left flank saw her exploit a gap to get inside the box – from there, her shot was powerful enough to go in, despite a deflection.

James O' Callaghan's side took control of possession from there and started to dictate the match to Galway, but some resolute defending saw the hosts hold out for 25 minutes.

Peamount found the equaliser in the 27th minute when Eleanor Ryan Doyle put the finishing touch to a breakaway move involving Megan Smyth Lynch and Dearbhaile Byrne on the left wing.

Aine O' Gorman came close herself in the closing stages of the first 45 minutes, but her toe-poked effort from just inside the 18-yard box was well turned away by a reflex Tina Hughes dive.

Following the restart, Peamount started brightest – and Doyle almost doubled her personal tally with a right-footed effort, but it dragged wide of the mark in the 50th minute.

In the 66th minute, however, it was the Galway Girls who would regain their lead when Aoife Thompson rounded Naoisha McAloon after getting on the end of a lovely through-ball from deep before coolly slotting home.

A pop-shot from Meabh de Burca moments later proved that Galway were growing in confidence, but still the two-goal cushion eluded them, while a wayward set-piece effort from Megan Smyth Lynch didn't do Peamount any favours.

Galway would score again 11 minutes from time, however, when Shauna Fox produced a remarkable free kick that was drilled low and hard into the back of the net from 25 yards.

But it wasn't over yet as O' Gorman popped up to reduce the deficit to one goal again when she slotted home after a quick turn-and-shot from Niamh Farrelly's quick free kick – and that was how it ended.
