Shelbourne attacking midfielder Alex Kavanagh has today been named the Só Hotels Women’s National League Player of the Month for March.

Kavanagh is the first player to pick up the award for the 2019 season, with games in the league kicking off on March 9.

The 19-year-old was presented with the award in FAI HQ by Só Hotels Business Development Executive, Rachel Lea Stuart this afternoon after making an impressive start for Shels in the first three series of games.

Kavanagh, a Finglas-native, spoke of how the award was a great reward for working her way into the Shels first team this season.

“It means a lot to me, even more so because last season I didn’t play as much as I wanted to, so in pre-season I had to work a lot harder to get into the team.”

And Kavanagh has been prolific in front of goal this season and credits this with helping her pick up the award.

She said: “A big part of it [winning the award], I think, is the goals, but I don’t think I would have been able to score the goals without the girls. I have been working hard, because of last season, as I said, but I’ve also been working on scoring goals.”

Shels have been working hard on playing good football this season, and it’s showing on the pitch.

“I think Dave coming in, I think he’s that kind of manager, he likes to play football, not just hit it long. So, in training, he works on that a lot. I think we can still do a lot more, we can work a lot more, we know as a team, we want to improve and keep improving,” added Kavanagh.
