Wexford Youths will travel to Lithuania for the club’s UEFA Women’s Champions League qualifying round games in August.

The draw took place at UEFA headquarters in Nyon this afternoon, with the Só Hotels Women’s National League champions being drawn against teams from Albania and Malta, along with the Lithuanian hosts.

Tom Elmes’ side will play Gintra Universitetas, Vllaznia and Birkirkara in the games which are set to take place on August 7, 10 and 13.

The host team were drawn first and the four teams will play against each other in a round-robin mini-tournament over the six days.

Speaking after the draw, the Youths manager said he is “delighted” that the group and venue is now set and he can move on to preparing for the games.

Elmes said: “It all really comes into reality when you’re over here at the draw, it really is great to be part of it. We are delighted that the draw is now done and we know where we’re going and the sides we will play. We had been looking at the various options and when you take into account flight times, venues etc. we are happy with the draw we got.

“We have played Gintra, the Lithuanian side before, so we have some idea of what to expect there, and it should be easy to access information and videos of them. As far as the Albanian team Vllaznia are concerned, we wouldn’t know too much about them, but we will look into them straight away. And with the Maltese side, Birkirkara, they would be one of the better fourth-seeded teams. We’ll get going straight away on getting our homework done on them all.”

The build-up to the games starts now for the Youths, and Elmes called for Irish people to support the club as they get set to represent the league and country at the top level of European women’s league football.

“We got great support the last time we played in the Champions League, and we will be hoping for more of the same again. We are not just representing Wexford and the surrounding counties that our players come from, such as Carlow, Kildare and Waterford, we are representing Ireland – we are proud to do that, and we will certainly give it our best in the games,” added Elmes.
