Galway WFC ran out 5-0 winners over Kilkenny United on Saturday evening in the Só Hotels Women’s National League clash at Eamonn Deacy Park.

A brace from Sadhbh Doyle and goals from Lynsey McKey, Aoife Thompson and Tessa Mullins saw the home side claim the three points.

Kilkenny United’s Amy Cahill was in top form, with three saves in the opening 20 minutes. The shot stopper denied Lynsey McKey, Aoife Thompson and Chloe Singleton in that period and pulled off a spectacular diving save to deny Thompson again in the 36th minute.

Galway finally made their breakthrough in the 25th minute after another shot was saved by Cahill, this time from McKenna Doyle. Singleton reacted fastest to the deflected ball and waited patiently for a team-mate to come free, before rolling the ball across goal to allow Lynsey McKey a tap in goal for the lead.

Just after the half hour mark the home side scored again. McKey struck a beautiful high ball forward to the running Sadhbh Doyle, she took the ball into the box before pulling it back for Aoife Thompson. Thompson, under pressure from the Kilkenny defence turned in the box to find a clear shot, she found it and struck the low into the bottom right corner of the net.

Billy Clery’s side added to their lead in the 53rd minute. McKenna Doyle collected the ball on the right flank before squaring the ball outside the box to Sadhbh Doyle. Doyle struck a high shot from long range, Cahill got her fingertips to it but could not prevent the ball from finding the back of the net.

Sadhbh Doyle got on the scoresheet once again in the 68th minute after Thompson brought the ball into the Kilkenny box once again. The forward shirked the tackle of Aoife Brophy before squaring the ball to the unmarked Doyle who struck the ball past Cahill and into the Kilkenny goal.

Doyle came very close to completing her hat trick with just a few minutes to go after an inch perfect Sinead Donovan through ball split the defence and allowed the midfielder in on goal. Doyle just could not compose herself enough and her shot was too tame to challenge Cahill in the Kilkenny goal.

Tessa Mullins rounded out the scoring just before full time when the substitute collected the ball on the right hand side of the box. The midfielder carried the ball forward and had to nick the ball towards goal with Cahill advancing quickly. The ball just about snuck inside the post for Galway’s fifth goal of the evening.
