DLR Waves picked up their fifth win of the season with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over a dogged Limerick side at Jackson Park.

Captain Catherine Cronin scored the decisive goal just before the hour after Mairead Teehan had cancelled out an early opener from Sophie O’Donoghue.

Limerick went into the game without regular coaches Dave Rooney and Irene Hehir, who are away in Lithuania with the Ireland under-17s, but they were solid and organised under deputy Andy Russell.

The visitors fell behind after just eight minutes as a mistake in the Limerick defence opened up space for O’Donoghue, who sent a low shot arrowing into the bottom corner.

Jetta Berrill, playing her final game before returning to her veterinary studies in Hungary, had already tested Medbh Ryan in the Blues goal with a low drive.

Waves’ dominance was underlined when Bobbi Downer strode forward from centre-back and unleashed a dipping shot that just about cleared the crossbar.

Cronin had two chances to double the lead in quick succession, first skipping in off the left wing and shooting wide before skying the rebound from Berrill’s cross-shot.

Those missed chances would prove costly as a swift counter-attack from a Waves corner saw striker Teehan given a free run on goal and she nestled her shot in the corner past debutante Eve Badana.

Limerick started the second half the brighter as well and Teehan was unfortunate she couldn’t keep her shot down from Lauren Keane’s cutback.

Gradually, the home side reasserted control on the game and another solo run from Cronin, beating two players, ended up narrowly wide while Leanne Payne had a penalty shout waved away.

Waves hit the front once more when a brilliant run and cross from Berrill was turned home from close range by winger Cronin.

The visitors were forced to introduce Karen Connolly for the injured Ryan but the traffic continued in one direction as Berrill’s looping cross narrowly edged wide of the post.

Limerick controlled the final ten minutes and it took an excellently-timed sliding challenge from Ally O’Keeffe to deny Teehan a tap-in and Waves held on through five minutes injury time for the win.
