The 2020 Women's National League season feels different, for many reasons, but there appears to be more quality goalkeepers spread out amongst the clubs than ever before.

In fact, such is the competition for places that some of the managers have already rotated their goalkeepers in the opening weeks of the season - clearly trying to identify who should be their starting No 1.

At Peamount United, James Callaghan is spoilt with having both Niamh Reid-Burke and Naoisha McAloon at his disposal - two goalkeepers who are good enough to be in the mix for Republic of Ireland Women's National Team recognition (Reid-Burke made the most recent squad to take on Germany).

Across Dublin, Shelbourne started the season in a similar position with Rachael Kelly and Amanda McQuillan, although the latter has since left to resume her studies in the United States. Kelly has the ability to become one of the very best keepers in this League and that is why she is being trusted by manager Dave Bell to defend their net.

At DLR Waves, Erica Turner and Eve Badana are keeping each other alert as manager Graham Kelly knows that either of them can command a starting place. Badana has been around the Ireland set-up before, while Turner will hold ambitions to reach that level.

Treaty United's Michaela Mitchell has been excellent so far this season, Athlone Town's Niamh Coombes has pulled off some notable saves for the League's newcomers, and Galway's Amanda Budden is talented enough to break back into the Ireland reckoning should her team pick up some silverware.

There is also a trend of clubs having two young keepers who they are putting a lot of faith in. Bohemians have Courtney Maguire and Rugile Auskalnyte, Cork City have Maria O'Sullivan and Leah Hayes Cohen, and Wexford Youths have Kiev Gray and Maeve Williams - all of whom are ones to watch for the next three years (or more).

It is always difficult to pick out the best goalkeeper in a season. Is it the one with the most clean sheets? Or the one with the most saves? Or the one who means the most to their respective team? There is no set criteria and that's why it is an interesting position to survey with so many excellent players in that spot this season.
