New Year new beginnings, will teams have learned harsh lessons in the first round of fixtures in the Bus Éireann Women’s National League? Will Raheny Utd, the only unbeaten team in the league, continue their good run of form? This weekend’s fixtures will go a long way to answering these questions.

Raheny make the long journey west to Castlebar Celtic who will still have fresh wounds from the last game before the Christmas break when they drew 5-5, in a cracker against the same opposition.   It was a controversial last minute penalty that snatched the draw for Raheny.   While Raheny are sitting pretty on top of the league, Celtic on the other hand will need all 3points this weekend to close the gap on Raheny and Peamount Utd.

Peamount United make the short journey to Tallaght, to face Shamrock Rovers. Rovers struggled to find form in the first part of the season and will be hoping that the break in the season will see their fortunes take a turn for the better. However, Peamount will want to take top spot should Raheny fail to pick up all three points.

In the sunny south East, Wexford Youths Women’s FC entertains Cork Women’s FC. Wexford may have the upper hand going into this fixture following a 2-0 win in the reverse fixture before Christmas. However, Cork will want to make amends by defeating Wexford on their home turf. Both sides have had mixed fortunes on the pitch, both had heavy defeat to Peamount and narrow losses to Raheny.

With the transfer window still open, new signings have been made and they’ll all be keen to have the positive impact that the clubs wish for.
